Where these figures come from
Data collection
Rent Officers at the Valuation Office Agency collect these rents from letting agents and landlords. They collect them as part of their work administering Housing Benefit and Universal Credit.
Coverage
ONS publishes these statistics for London about four times a year. Each edition covers the previous 12 months.
Figures are published for London as a whole, for each borough, and for each postcode district. No other ONS rent statistics are published at postcode district level.
Limitations
Landlords and letting agents provide data voluntarily, so the sample is not random. Rent Officers use Census data to aim for a sample that reflects the private rental market.
ONS advises that these statistics should not be compared across time periods or between areas.
Rents paid by Housing Benefit claimants are not included.
Figures based on fewer than five rents are not published, and appear as a dash. Counts of rents are rounded to the nearest 10.
The figures are not adjusted for the type or quality of property let. Differences between editions may reflect the properties collected rather than a change in price.
